I actually sewed this block together today, curved seams and all. Whoo! This is heading into advanced territory for me.
I also made more paper foundation lashes. Yipes! There are lots more curved seams to sew. Does anyone know any tricks for these? Thanks!
I found an easier way to do curves using freezer paper. It requires lots of ironing between every fabric added on but if you do about 10 blocks at once you can do it lots quicker. It's way to hard too explain, maybe I will set up a tutorial. I traced the template and made one from Kaffe's book using this method but I didn't like the colours I chose and gave up.
ReplyDeleteAnyway the method is better and easier than foundations. Good luck anyway, its looking great.
The quilt is absolutely beautiful!! And your curves look great! I love to do curves and when paper piecing them I do remove the paper from the inside curve only to provide you with a little more give to sew the curve. This works really well. Then also going slow and steady, keeping that 1/4" seam and voila! a perfect curved seam.
ReplyDeleteI have never done curves,,,but they do look very nice. Thanks for sharing,Amy
ReplyDeleteI l-love it!!! Your color mixes are too fun
ReplyDeleteThe only hint I may hav is to pin, pin pin and also to use a stiletto, or a seam ripper to ease sewing into the machine. Have said all that, I stink at curved piecing.
good luck, it looks great so far!
wonderful! I was going to ask you if YOU had any tips for this. I once made a whole bunch of spiky things on paper for a Karen Stone pattern and could not get the curved piece to go on to save my life.
ReplyDeleteI'm not an expert at curves. Yours look great!
ReplyDeleteLookin' good! Love the fabric choices. Have you ever tried the Curve Master sewing machine foot? It really worked well for me.
ReplyDeleteThis is turning out to be a really dazzling quilt. I agree with Barb about the stiletto-- I bought one to do my Winding Ways quilt and it made piecing the curves so much easier. It really gives you a lot of control over the fabric as it's going under the presser foot.
ReplyDeleteThis looks great. I have never tried paper piecing or the accurate curve piecing.. But, I agree with Mary, Last year as I was going through the AQS show.. one of the vendors had Curve Master foot for the demo and it worked great.
ReplyDeleteBuffy has done curve piecing in the past..hint hint!
To me, Your curves are looking great!
I definitely want to try this someday..
It's fantastic! I'm impressed with all your curves. Let me know what ends up working best for those for you!
ReplyDeleteThis is looking just wonderful. My best thought for curved piecing is to try it with the concave curve on top, then try it on the bottom. See which one works best for you. Opinions vary on this. I tend to like it with the convex curve on top so I can manipulate the piece as I stitch. And a stiletto (sp?) does help control the pieces as they get closer to the needle.
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be spectacular! I love what you have already. You're a braver woman than I to take on those curves. I'll send you my best wishes for your continued success but beyond that I can't help you!
ReplyDeleteI am currently working on a similar pickle dish from the Material Obsession 2 quilt. Although I have always seen this done with sewn curves to finish the block - the MO 2 quilt uses applique to add the pickle dish to the background. I am also using the black and white dot for the centers. I have done several curved blocks and do work with the concave on top...and I use lots of pins! Love this quilt!
ReplyDeleteThe red is so dynamic and eye catching. I love that you titled EyeLashes. I have never done curves either and you obviously have the knack right off the bat!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a bunch of great advice and encouragement! Isn't the blogger community just amazing? Thanks to all of you, the curves are going together much easier now.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks!!
this quilt is simply amazing.
ReplyDeleteA spectacular quilt...you look so great with curves....what's the matter? ;)
ReplyDeleteCiao!
Grazia
Just stunning!
