14 Shirts and a Pair of Pants
This is all made from clothing I bought at thrift stores. While I was shopping, I gave myself three rules: spend no more than $1.29 a piece, make sure they're 100% cotton, and of course they had to be stripes. This quilt is inspired by one in Kaffe Fassett's book, Passionate Patchwork, and by Beth and her summer striped challenge.
Here you can see the Ralph Lauren logo on one of the shirts.
This tool helped a lot. See how easy it is to line up the stripes? I cut triangles for 3", 6" and 9" squares.
Meanwhile, I made these hot pads for a friend's birthday. They're made of 5" squares of hand dyed fabrics from Malka at a stitch in dye. I love these fabrics!
Oh wow. I love this quilt so much, and to think it is all recycled fabric! It would have cost a lot more done in all Kaffe Fassett fabrics :-)
ReplyDeleteI love you pot holders :)
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is so gorgeous. I've fallen in love.
ReplyDeleteI just love that stripey quilt!! And with 2 adult sons I think I've just found a perfect handmade gift for them. Must go now. Off to the local charity shops in search of stripey shirts!!!
ReplyDeleteKeep sewing! Keep showing!!
Oh so beautiful! My husband was stepping out to work and I stopped him to see this beauty.. He just stopped and stared.. and stared and stared.. and said, "oh wow!" The engineer in my house loves this quilt as much as I do!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous quilt, Nifty!
I love thrift store shirt quilts! What an awesome job you did. I tend to lean towards plaids, but maybe I need to rethink that and buy some stripes...;-) Nice work!
ReplyDeleteSuperb quilt. I love it.
ReplyDeleteWonderful quilt!! Wonderful repurposing of shirts (and pants)! Gotta love those stripes!
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is amazing. What a dedicated effort to use thrift store finds only. It turned out beautifully.
ReplyDeleteI am drooling as this quilt is stunning!! (I wish I had made it!)
ReplyDeleteGreat challenge and fabulous results!!!
Hi, Thank you for your tips and pointing out the links. I have now got them working again. I still think I'll give you the credit for the pot holders, they are still your wonderful creation and you deserve the lovely comments. Take care Georgina from Glasgow, Scotland.
ReplyDeleteLove the striped boxes quilt, and can't believe how well you matched up the corners! I tried this very pattern myself, with thrifted shirts, a while back. Sadly, they were so expensive, I've just decided to leave them for a bit.
ReplyDeleteSeeing your lovely quilt, I know I'll save those few blocks for later. You never know when you'll come across some striped shirts to cut into. And I bet this quilt is soft and lovely to touch...
; )
Ooops, trick of the eye - looks like your top isn't quilted yet...

wheee! And I thought our prices were good - I can get shirts for $1.79 but that's as low as it goes.
ReplyDeletewow very cool!!
ReplyDeleteLove the graphic quality of this quilt. I just inherited some great shirts as well as jeans from my son, who is cleaning out his closet. After seeing your post I went out and bought the angle ruler. Sadly my project will have to wait until the new year. This is a really great visually inspiring quilt.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! This is positively amazing! How clever of you!
ReplyDeleteI selected you for a Sunshine Award...check out my blog!!
ReplyDeleteI may have to run out and get one of those triangle rulers! I've always loved the look of stripes used that way but never wanted to mess with the process. This makes it look do-able. Meanwhile, it's a good thing I don't know where you live because I would sneak in one night and steal this top!
ReplyDeleteWow, this quilt is incredible. The graphic nature just has your eye dancing around it. Love it!
ReplyDeleteWow, too cool :o)
