Cowgirl Dreams

"Cowgirl Dreams" 80 x 80"
I made this quilt top over two years ago, and finally got around to quilting it,
just in time for the local guild show in March.
This is one that I can honestly say, "The fabric made me do it."
For the story and more fabric close ups, click here.

I decided to quilt it simply, in order to show off the print most clearly.

After stitching in "every stinkin' ditch," I cut a template and marked the curves.

Then I used the walking foot, which was pretty easy.

On the rope, well, I had to follow it, right?
This part I did with free motion quilting.
Not perfect, but good enough.

A few nights before the show, I washed it, feeling quite happy.
Then the complications began.
I hadn't pre-washed the red bandana backing
and some, not all, of the ivory fabrics had turned pink!
Luckily, a few hours soak in the bathtub with Oxyclean removed all the pink.
It also destroyed the fake buckskin fringe on the border.
Darn!  I cut it off carefully and got it to the show on time.

  1. It's always the reds that run. You did a good job saving it though. I hope you don't miss the fringe too much.
I've made one Lone Star & gave it away, maybe it's time to try another.
    Well sewn!

  6. What a striking quilt, and the prints make it fun to look at up close, too. Glad you were able to rescue it with a soak.

  7. Oh, how I loved that fabric and love your quilt. I made a double nine patch out of it can called it Cowboy Dreams as well. Great minds? It went to Quilts of Valor. Sorry about the fringe, but it's good to know that fake suede doesn't hold up to OxyClean. There's a cowboy costume in the attic that may need cleaning someday...

  8. What a shocking disappointment to lose the fringe during the "save"! It looks great even without it though. The quilting is a perfect fit!

  12. I perfectly remember this cowgirl quilt, but what a journey until it could be shown! Poor fringe...
Thank you for showing your two decisions about machine quilting, both are clever & wise at the right place. That is why it is so important to know different techniques!

  14. Yee-Haw! Love that quilt and all of the photo details. Nice write up. I sympathize with the last minute chaos, sounds familiar! Good work saving the day. It came out awesome. There is always the encore fringe if it haunts you...

  15. I'm not a cowgirl, but I would LOVE to have those dreams, especially under such a magnificent quilt!
And... the fringe bereavement made it even more interesting!!
    all's well that ends well.

  16. What a darling quilt to have in your local show. The outer border floral adds a Dale Evans touch to the stars. The fringe made a wonderful final addition. I'm sorry it didn't work after cleaning.
I've used both the cowboy and cowgirl quilt although not together. Congratulations on a lively finish.

  17. Red ... the color least likely to be trusted. Yesterday the pre-school kids made a paper collage of wet colored paper. Twenty guesses which color ran ... and the first 19 don't count!

  18. HOW MUCH FUN. I adore those Alexander Henry prints. Yippee. And all those nifty reds really made it even more special. Great job

  21. Well I'm sad your fringe had to go, but at least you salvaged the rest of the quilt. I like that the horses and cowgirls all have names, and that you stitched around the rope (what patience). It's lovely, and I'm glad the fabric made you do it.

  22. I've always loved this project so it's great to see it finished. I'm sorry to hear there were complications. Luckily the dye came out, but I'm sorry to hear about the buckskin fringe. I guess you could sew more on, but then maybe it's just part of the story of this quilt. I loved seeing closeups of your quilting. I'm sure it was much admired at the show.

  23. Congratulations on a fun finish! Sorry to hear of the troubles with color-bleeding, good to know there are ways to redeem that. A lone star quilt is on my bucket list of quilts to make one day...

  24. This is a really funny quilt, the way you used the fabrics. I'm sorry you had problems with the fabric on the back and you lost the fringe. Did it all right in the show? You said the show in March but I think you meant May?

  26. Oh, I am so glad you showed this quilt! I don't miss the fringe one bit. That rope fabric is so wonderful that I cannot imagine this quilt without it!!

  27. I delighted in the fact that you had all these problems.......not that I wanted you to have problems, but because you made me feel normal! It seems I have these really weird things happen, when I know better than to do some of them!

LOL. I have a lot of these same fabrics! One of those things that I can't bring myself to use. Now I want to drag them out and cut them up!!

    Love your quilt!
