Good Ol' Fashioned String Quilt

My very favorite quilts are the mish-mash "string" quilts from years ago. This is my attempt to recreate one of those. It's a group project with the fun gals over at the 15 minutes play blog.

There's nothing better than sitting down and sewing a bunch of scraps together. Each block is 6-1/2".

Happy Solstice!

The holidays are a lot fun. But I love to celebrate the Winter Solstice. At last, the days will be getting longer. Here's to visions of the coming spring!

I made this quilt a few years ago with inspiration from the cover of Georgia Quilts by Anita Zeleski Weinraub. The original quilt was made by Annie Parham Howard in 1960.

Scrappy Spider Web

After quilting three quilts in the last three weeks, I can honestly say I enjoy free-motion quilting! I thought I'd NEVER say that, not in a million years. I gave myself the goal of quilting three quilts this summer--the two in the last post and this one. They're not perfect, but that's fine with me. My only goal was to get them DONE. I figure a quilt, no matter how it's quilted, is better than a pieced top sitting in the cupboard.

This is the third in my series of "summer quilts," that is, quilts that I made over the last two summers. I knew I wouldn't want to work with these when the cooler weather came. I only like to work with colors of the season. Are you that way too?

Many thanks to Marit for her spiderweb tutorial.

String Quilts

Happy Independence Day weekend!

I thought it would be fun to celebrate with some good old fashioned string quilts.

My favorite part of making quilts is the pile of scraps at the end. I love to sit at the machine with a mess of scraps and sew them all together, design-as-you-go style. The results are always a fun surprise!

This quilt was inspired by one on the cover of the book, Georgia Quilts, by Anita Zaleski Weinraub. The original quilt was made by Annie Parham Howard in Morgan County in 1960.

This is your basic Spider Web design.

This one is great for using those little pieces. This sashing is 2" wide.
I plan to quilt both of these this summer, so stay tuned!

One of my all-time favorite quilting books is Liberated String Quilts by Gwen Marston. It includes many photos of old string quilts that are truly amazing!
