I spent the week quilting this and learning new skills.
"Winter Solstice" 68" x 88"
Pattern by Gwen Marston in her book, Liberated String Quilts.
I thought I was learning feathers, but they turned out to be hearts. Oh well. I like hearts too.
I never thought I'd say this. FREE MOTION QUILTING IS FUN! (With plenty of dark chocolate.)
Now, off to shop for binding fabric and baste the next one.
This just may be the summer of fmq for me!

LeeAnn, that is fab-u-lous! Feathers are just stretched out hearts, so you are on the right track. Love how this turned out, great job!
Beautiful work!!
I love everything abut this one: the strings, the starry-night polka dots, the plaid sashing, the chubby feather quilting! Excellent job!
Love it! Gorgeous!!!
It is just gorgeous!! And good for you with the quilting, you did a fabulous job! Chocolate helps everything, doesn't it??
I see MANY more quilted quilts in YOUR FUTURE!!! Love this one!
Magnificent! A really spectacular tribute to the winter solstice.
Gosh its beautiful, who wouldn't want that on their bed or sofa..
How happy is this? Free Motion Quilting is fun as long as the quilt is small! I missed your last post. Just bought metres of white but it's waiting for an idea. I'll have to visit all your links now.
FMQ is my project for this year. I love this quilt. the polka dot fabric really makes it.

Yay for fmq! And your quilt is divine, I adore all that colour on the black and white polka. Great job. xo
LeeAnn, Winter Solstice is wonderful!! I love your FMQ hearty feathers!! I can see you and your machine ( and dark chocolate) are in for some fun times together!!
Wow, looks amazing! Great job! I still need to learn how to free motion quilt, I've always been a bit daunted by it.
That's gorgeous! I set out to do feathers and ended up being leaves. But I do like them. Yes, Free motion quilting is fun once the tops are basted. I think the basting is back breaking, knee aching job.
What thread are you using?
woohoo, go go go!
Colorful! Wonderful! Congrats on the new fmq skills, too.
Fantastic finish! I love the polka dots...
Oh! Oh! This is fabulous!!!!
Love how this came out...the combination of plaid and polka dots makes me smile! Your FMQ looks great...at what point did it become fun? nice to know that may be in my future!

I am so happy for you! Now I know I have to give it a try. I already have the chocolate.
I needed a nudge to get going on my free motion quilting. Do you use a spray basting? Your quilt is wonderful!
Great job all around.
It looks stunning! Your quilting is beautiful! The different varieties of fabrics makes it very interesting to watch!
Smashing! And good for you that you are tackling FMQ.
string quilts are so fun, your stars are great.
I am so flattered you came to my blog! I have been following yours for ages.
Yea! great quilt and the quilting looks great.
Love the b&w polkadots!
I'm impressed that your feathers look like hearts- my FMQ attempts haven't looked like anything at all! I love the quilt!
This is fabulous! I just love it. Great job! And dark chocolate makes everything better!
At first fmq frightened the do do out of me. Now it is completely meditative. I love all stages of quilting really, even the binding. But the best for me is the quilting.
Found your blog through a link on Quilter Kathy's blog to your streak of lightening quilt. Then got to looking around generally and found your Winter Solstice quilt - WOW stunning!!! I have Gwen's book you mention, so will have to check out the pattern ... I have plenty of strings :)
